The Pink Awakening explores the resurgence of girlhood as a dominant cultural trend in 2023, continuing into 2024. Defined by traditionally feminine elements—bows, ribbons, and a predominance of pink—this trend can be understood through lenses of nostalgia and escapism. This publication examines how women connect through this movement across various media, marking it as a significant shift from past trends shaped by external influences, such as the male gaze.
I explored ways to visually represent femininity through type, pushing boundaries by incorporating script fonts and tight-leading sans serifs. The delicate flow reflects the theme’s softness, while the structured sans serif elements create balance, resulting in a dynamic yet cohesive visual language.
Inspired by the texture of lace during my research, I experimented with replicating its intricacy through type. By layering tightly-leaded sans serifs, I created a woven effect that mimics lace’s delicate structure. Using p5.js and the logic developed through my experimentation, I generated a custom texture and applied it to my poster series, merging technology with typography.
